Certain London neighbourhoods are a bit dangerous to live in.

Cierto profesor se ha quejado a la dirección por el mal comportamiento de sus alumnos.

A certain teacher has complained to the management about the bad behaviour of his students.

Hay ciertas opiniones que no merecen ser respetadas.

There are certain opinions that do not deserve to be respected.

Cierta vecina ha estado toda la noche haciendo ruído.

A certain neighbour has been making noise all night.

So far there should be no surprises.

However, at times, cierto can also mean “true/truthful”, “sure”, or “reliable”.

No creo que sea cierto lo que dicen de tí.

I don’t think it’s true what they say about you.

Puede ser cierto lo que publica el New York Times, pero me cuesta creerlo.

The New York Times may be right, but I find it hard to believe.

It is also possible for cierto to mean “partial” or “a bit of”.

Noté cierta alegría cuando nos vió de nuevo.

I noticed a certain joy when he saw us again.

El presidente mostró cierta sorpresa tras aquella pregunta.

The president showed some surprise at this question.
