Donde is a relative pronoun.

It will introduce a subordinate clause.

Donde means where.

Vivimos en una sociedad donde los ricos son impunes ante la justicia.

We live in a society where the rich go unpunished in the eyes of the law.

Galicia es un lugar donde raramente hace calor.

Galicia is a place where it is rarely hot.

Donde [With an Acccent]

Dónde is an exclamatory and interrogative pronoun.

You use dónde in direct and indirect exclamatory sentences and in questions.

Dónde means where.

Here are some examples:

¿Dónde trabaja tu marido?

Where does your husband work?

¡Dónde no hay miseria!

Where there is no misery!

Olga quiere saber dónde puede dejar las llaves para que las recojamos luego.

Olga wants to know where she can leave the keys for us to pick them up later.

There doesn’t have to be an exclamation mark or question mark.

Donde vs Dónde

A useful trick that you can use if you are ever in doubt is to see if you can replace “where” with “to what location/in what location”.

If you can do so, then you have to use dónde [with an accent].

¡Dónde vas a estas horas!

Where (to what location) are you going at this time!

No sé dónde he dejado mis llaves.

I don’t know (in what location) where I left my keys.

Nos iremos a pasar el fin de semana (a un lugar) donde podamos desconectar.

We will go away for the weekend (to a place) where we can disconnect.
