Mas [Without Accent]

Mas means but.

It is the more formal version of pero (but).

In spoken language it is not used so often, but in writing you may see it.

Have a look at some examples:

Todos ellos aceptaron la invitación mas solo unos pocos vinieron al acto de inauguración.

All of them accepted the invitation but only a few of them came to the opening ceremony.

Mi madre no estaba mucho en casa mas nunca nos faltó de nada.

My mother was not at home much but we never lacked for anything.

Hace bastante calor mas no es algo insoportable.

It is quite hot but not unbearably so.

Más [With Accent]

Más means more.

It tends to be used in comparisons and will be used as a pronoun or an adjective.

Siempre me ha gustado más la playa que la montaña.

I have always liked the beach more than the mountains.

Esta semana tendré que trabajar un día más porque mi compañera está enferma.

This week I will have to work an extra day because my colleague is ill.

No digas más, esta noche lo celebraremos.

Say no more, we’ll celebrate tonight.
