There are possessive adjectives that have a long form and are placed after the nouns they are modifying.

You can see these in the table.

These long form possessive adjectives perform the same function as the short form possessive adjectives, however the long form ones stress the possession rather than the noun.

Please have a look at the following examples:

Carlos es hijo mío.

Carlos is my son.

Anna es hija mía.

Anna is my daughter.

La familia Alvarez son amigos nuestros.

The Alvarez family are friends of ours.

Las recepcionistas del hotel se hicieron amigas nuestras.

The hotel receptionists became our friends.

Creo que este perro es suyo.

I think this dog is his.

Hemos encontrado varias chaquetas en el ropero. ¿Son las suyas?

We found several jackets in the wardrobe – are they yours?

He pasado por delante del colegio nuestro y me ha entrado nostalgia.

I walked past our school and I felt nostalgic.

No te olvides de recoger las maletas nuestras del aeropuerto.

Don’t forget to pick up our bags from the airport.

Acabo de terminar de leer ese libro tuyo que me regalaste y creo que es fantástico.

I just finished reading that book of yours that you gave me and I think it’s fantastic.

Esas gafas de sol son mías. ¿Me las puedes pasar?

Those sunglasses are mine, can you pass them on to me?

Please note that the long form possessive adjectives are placed after the noun, not before.

As you may have seen in the table, suyo/suya/suyos/suyas can refer to many possessors. Therefore you need to look at the context to figure out who it is referring to.
