Using Past Participles As Adjectives in Spanish

You may have seen the past particle form of a verb [-ado/-ido form] with haber in a compound tense. Think of the present perfect tense and the past perfect tense.

However, you can also use past participles as adjectives.

Please have a look at the following examples:

Carlos estaba dormido en clase.

Carlos was asleep in class.

Andrea estaba dormida en clase.

Andrea was asleep in class.

Tus hijos estaban dormidos en clase.

Your kids were asleep in class.

Tus hijas estaban dormidas en clase.

Please note how you are using the same past participle of the verb “dormir” every time, whilst agreeing it with the subject.

They tend to be used with estar, but they can also accompany nouns that they are directly modifying.
