Usage of Conduire

This section on conduire conjugation in the present tense will show you how conduire is used in French.

The verb conduire means “to drive”.

There are 2 important usages for the verb conduire.

  1. Conduire is used to indicate that one is driving a vehicle.

Je conduis une voiture noire.

I drive a black car.

  1. Conduire can also be used as “to lead”

Seule Margot peut nous y conduire.

Only Margot can lead us there.

construire to construct/to build
coproduire to coproduce 
cuire to cook
déconstruire to deconstruct 
détruire to destroy
éconduire to get rid of/ to reject
enduire to coat/ to cover
introduire introduce 
méconduire to misbehave 
nuire to harm 
produire to produce 
réduire to reduce 
séduire to seduce 

As you can see this group of -uire verbs has a few important verbs that you should be aware of.

All of these verbs are conjugated in the same way.

This group falls in the fifth group of -re verb conjugations.

Pronunciation of Conduire

In this section on conduire conjugation in the present tense we will focus on pronunciation.

There are 2 important rules to take into account when you want to pronounce a conduire conjugation in the present tense in French.

  1. The je, tu, and il/elle/on verb forms all have the same pronunciation. The -s andt endings are not pronounced. In this case, it is just the “condui” part that gets pronounced.

Je conduis

Tu conduis

Il conduit

All these verbs have the same exact pronunciation.

You don’t pronounce the letters in red.

  1. In the ils/elles verb form, you don’t pronounce the -ent ending. In this case, it is just the “conduis” part that gets pronounced.

Ils conduisent

The last letter that is pronounced is the “s“.

You don’t pronounce the letters in red.
