Écrire means “to write” and is an irregular verb.
There are 4 general ways that you can use écrire.
- One can use écrire as “to write”.
Je vais l’écrire.
I am going to write that down.
- One can use écrire as “to compose” something.
Je vais lui écrire une lettre.
I am going to write a letter to him.
- One can use écrire to note something down in writing.
Veuillez écrire votre témoignage dans ce rapport.
Please write down your testimony in this rapport.
- One can use écrire to describe how a word is written.
Ce mot est écrit sans aucune majuscule.
This word is written without any capital letters.
Écrire and Its Derivatives

As you can see, écrire has a few important derivatives that you should be aware of.
All of these derivatives are conjugated in the same way.

Pronunciation of Écrire
In this section on écrire conjugation in the present tense we will focus on pronunciation.
There are 2 important rules to take into account when you want to pronounce an écrire conjugation in the present tense.
- The je, tu, and il/elle/on verb forms all have the same pronunciation. The -s and –t endings are not pronounced. It is just the “écri” part that gets pronounced.
J’écris
Tu écris
Il écrit
These verbs are pronounced in the same exact way.
You don’t pronounce the letters in red.
- In the ils/elles verb form, you don’t pronounce the -ent ending. It is just the “écriv” part that gets pronounced.
Ils écrivent
The last letter that is pronounced is the “v“.
You don’t pronounce the letters in red.
