As you can see there are only 2 possibilities on how to make adjectives plural in French.

  1. Masculine and Plural

If an adjective is masculine and plural, then you have to add an extra -s at the end.

grand -> grands

joli -> jolis

  1. Feminine and Plural

If an adjective is feminine and plural, then you have to add an extra -es at the end.

grand -> grandes

joli -> jolies

How to Make Adjectives Plural in French

To make regular adjectives plural in French, you have to add an -s at the end of masculine adjectives, and an -es at the end of feminine adjectives.

Please take a look at the following sentences to get a practical understanding on how to make adjectives plural in French.

The adjective grand means big in French.

In the two examples, you can see how grand changes in every sentence depending on its gender and number.

Il y a un grand appartement ici, et deux grands appartements là-bas.

There is one big appartment here, and there are two big appartments over there.

In this example you can see how grand is masculine and singular, and then masculine and plural.

The first time grand doesn’t have an ending, but in the second one there is an s at the end, making it grands.

Je n’ai pas une grande maison, mais j’ai deux grandes maisons.

I don’t have one big house, but I have two big houses.

In this example you can see how grand is feminine and singular, and then feminine and plural.

The first time grand has an e ending making it grande. The second time there is an es at the end, making it grandes.

The adjective joli means pretty in French.

In the two examples, you can see how joli changes in every sentence depending on its gender and number.

Le joli garçon et les jolis garçons.

The pretty boy and the pretty boys.

In this example you can see how joli is masculine and singular and then masculine and plural.

You don’t pronounce any of the new endings.

How to Make Adjectives Plural in French with Multiple Genders

In cases with mixed genders, you will use the masculine form of the adjective.

Il est intelligent et elle est intelligente. Ils sont intelligents.

He is intelligent and she is intelligent. They are intelligent.

As you can see, the masculine plural form (intelligents) is used in the second sentence.

If however, there are only women, then you will use the female plural form.

Simone est petite et Roxanne est petite. Elles sont petites.

Simone is small and Roxanne is small. They are small.

As you can see, the feminine plural form (petites) is used in the second sentence.
