How to Negate with Two Verbs in French
In this lesson I am mostly going to use the ne…pas negation, to show you how to negate with two verbs in French.
This principle applies to any other form of negation, but this one is the most often used, and also the easiest one to understand.
- In a negation with both a conjugated verb and an infinitive (full verb), the ne…pas is placed on each side of the conjugated verb.
vouloir
Je ne veux pas cuisiner.
I don’t want to cook.
devoir
Tu ne dois pas mentir.
You mustn’t lie.
pouvoir
Il ne peut pas conduire.
He can’t drive.
aller
Nous n’allons pas faire ça.
We’re not going to do that.
devoir
Vous ne devez pas manger.
You don’t have to eat.
aimer
Ils n’aiment pas danser.
They don’t like dancing.
You can see that ne is placed before the conjugated verb, and pas is placed after the conjugated verb.
