How to use Ça
Ça is a pronoun and a contraction of cela.
However, in speech and informal writing people tend to use ça.
Depending on the context, ça means this, that, or it.
Please take a look at the following 3 sentences to get a practical understanding of how to use ça in French.
Je veux essayer ça.
I want to try this.
Ça arrive souvent.
That happens often.
Ça va exploser.
It is going to explode.
As you can see the ça is used in all 3 sentences, and its meaning changes depending on the context.
There is one important thing to be mindful of when you use ça.
Ça will always be followed by the singular form. Even if the thing it refers to is plural.
Please take a look at the following 3 sentences see this.
Aimez-vous les fraises ? Oui, j’adore ça !
Do you like strawberries? Yes I love it!
Aimez-vous les bananes ? Oui, j’adore ça !
Do you like bananas? Yes I love it!
Aimez-vous ce repas ? Oui, j’adore ça !
Do you like this meal? Yes I love it!
In the first two sentences, the nouns are in the plural form (strawberries and bananas).
In the third sentence, the noun is singular.
In all cases ça will be followed by the singular form.
