Usage of Savoir

This section on savoir conjugation in the present tense will show you how savoir is used in French.

Savoir means “to know” and is an irregular verb.

There are 2 important rules to know when you want to use savoir.

  1. Savoir can be used to say that you possess a skill. In this case, savoir will be followed by a full verb (infinitive).

Je sais nager.

I can swim.

Vous savez parler allemand.

You can speak German.

  1. Savoir can be used to express knowledge of facts. In this case, savoir will be followed by a clause (ce que, ce qui, combien, où, quand, quel, que, qui)

Je sais qu’ils sont les meilleurs dans ce domaine.

I know that they are the best in this field.

Tu sais que j’ai raison.

You know I’m right.

Il sait qui nous sommes.

He knows who we are.

Nous savons quel est le problème.

We know what the problem is.

Ils savent ce qui se passe.

They know what’s going on.

Pronunciation of Savoir

In this section on savoir conjugation in the present tense we will focus on pronunciation.

There is 2 important rules to take into account when you want to pronounce a savoir conjugation in the present tense.

  1. The je, tu, and il/elle/on verb forms all have the same pronunciation. The -s andt endings are not pronounced. It is just the “sai” part that gets pronounced.

Je sais

Tu sais

Il sait

These verbs are pronounced in the same exact way.

You don’t pronounce the letters in red.

  1. In the ils/elles verb form, you don’t pronounce the -ent ending. It is just the “sav” part that gets pronounced.

Ils savent

The last letter that is pronounced is the “v“.

You don’t pronounce the letters in red.
