How to use À qui and Auquel

If you want to say “to whom”, “what”, or “which” in French, then you will use:

auquel/à laquelle/auxquels/auxquelles = to whom / what / which

Je lui ai donné un avertissement, auquel il n’a pas prêté attention.

I gave him a warning, to which he paid no attention.

La page à laquelle il se réfère n’existe plus.

The page to which he is referring no longer exists.

La vitesse à laquelle on oublie est tout simplement incroyable.

The speed with which we forget is simply incredible.

You can also also use à qui (about whom / to whom).

à qui = about whom / to whom

However, a qui only applies to living things.

La personne à laquelle j’ai posé la question connaissait la réponse.

The person whom I asked the question knew the answer.

La personne à qui j’ai posé la question connaissait la réponse.

The person whom I asked the question knew the answer.

Mes parents, auxquels je parle rarement, s’inquiètent pour moi.

My parents, to whom I talk rarely, are worried about me.

Mes parents, à qui je parle rarement, s’inquiètent pour moi.
