If you want to say “how come?” in French, then you can use the following constructions:

  • how come? = comment ça se fait?

Je pense qu’elle est triste. Comment ça se fait ?

I think that she is sad. How come ?

This method is used in informal situations.

  • how come? = / comment cela se fait-il ?

Je pense qu’elle est triste. Comment cela se fait-il ?

This method is used in formal situation.

You can also tell that it is more formal by the fact that there is an inversion in the question.

How come [action/thing]?

You can also use “how come?” when you want to refer to a certain action or thing.

  • how come [action/thing]? = comment ça se fait que…?

Comment ça se fait que tu ne dormes pas encore ?

How come you’re not asleep yet?

Comment ça se fait que tu parles si bien français ?

How come you know French so well?

  • how come [action/thing]? = comment se fait-il que … ?

Comment se fait-il que vous soyez toujours si énergique ?

How come you’re always so energetic?

Comment se fait-il que tu saches tout ça ?

You can see that now there’s a que at the end of the construction.

Please note that you have to use the subjonctif with this construction.
