How to ask What is it in Spanish
In this lesson you will learn 4 ways to ask “what is it?” in Spanish.
- What is it? = ¿Qué es?
If you don’t know what something is, then you can simply just ask:
¿Qué es?
What is it?
You will then get an explanation.
Another example is the following:
A: Prueba esto.
B: ¿Qué es?
A: Es cuscús.
A: Try this.
B: What is it?
A: It’s couscous.
2. What is a…? = ¿Qué es un/una…?
If you want to refer to something non-specific you can say:
¿Qué es un/una…?
What is a…?
So imagine you heard un meteoro and un huracán, and you want to know what they mean. You can then ask:
¿Qué es un meteoro?
What is a meteor?
¿Qué es un huracán?
What is a hurricane?
Or, if you heard una selva and una pandemia, and you want to know what they mean. You can then ask:
¿Qué es una selva?
What’s a jungle?
¿Qué es una pandemia?
What’s a pandemic?
3. ¿Qué es el/la…? = What is the…?
If you want to refer to something specific, then you can ask:
¿Qué es el/la…?
What is the…?
So imagine you heard el amor and la verdad, and you want to know what they mean. You can then ask:
¿Qué es el amor?
What is love?
In this English sentence you can omit “the”.
¿Qué es la verdad?
What is the truth?
4. What is that? = ¿Qué es eso?
¿Qué es eso?
What is that?
This one is very similar to the first one.
However, rather than saying “what is it?” you will now say “what is that?”.
