How to say Love in French

If you want to say love in French, then you will use “aimer”.

Please have a look at the following examples, to better understand how to say love in French.

Je t’aime.

I love you.

Elle m’aime.

She loves me.

Ils aiment leurs enfants.

They love their children.

The verb aimer can also be used in questions.

When talking about people, aimer means to love.

When talking about things, aimer means to like.

Est-ce que tu l’aimes ?

Do you love him?

Tu aimes ma nouvelle Playstation ?

Do you like my new Playstation?

Est-ce qu’il aime son école ?

Does he like his school?

How to express Liking in French

If you want to say that you like someone or something, then you will use “aimer bien”.

Je t’aime bien.

I like you.

Elle m’aime bien.

She likes me.

J’aime bien leurs enfants.

I like their children.

How to Form Negations with Aimer

Now you know that aimer can mean both to love and to like, depending on how it’s used.

There’s one important rule you have to keep in mind, when you want to make a negation with aimer (e.g. ne….pas).

You can’t negate “aimer bien”, you have to use “aimer”. The context will show if it’s love or like.

Paul n’aime pas Clara.

Paul doesn’t love Clara.

Paul doesn’t like Clara.

Je n’aime pas les montagnes russes.

I don’t like roller coasters.

Je n’aime pas les voitures laides.

I don’t like ugly cars.

As you can see, you have to use the context to determine whether it’s love or like.

In the first sentence it’s impossible to tell without knowing the actual situation.

In the other two sentences it is a lot easier.
