In this lesson we will only focus on singular and feminine, as there is another lesson on how to make adjectives plural in French.

Please note that the base form of regular adjectives is masculine and singular.

That’s why you don’t see anything for masculine and singular.

  1. Feminine and Singular

If an adjective is feminine and singular, then you have to add an extra -e at the end.

grand -> grande

petit-> petite

joli -> jolie

To make a regular adjective feminine in French, you have to add an -e at the end of the adjective.

J’aime le grand jardin et la grande maison.

I like the big garden and the big house.

Il y a un petit chien et une petite girafe.

There is a small dog and a small giraffe.

Le film est mauvais et la musique est mauvaise.

The pretty prince is with the pretty girl.

Le garçon amusant et la fille amusante.

Nouns that have le or un as the article are masculine.

Nouns that have la or une as the article are feminine.

As you can see, the masculine nouns don’t have an e ending, but the feminine nouns do have an e ending.

There’s one more important thing that you should be aware of.

You don’t pronounce the extra -e.
