Introduction

In French, there is a difference between visiting a place, and visiting someone.

It’s very easy to say that you are visiting a place.

All you have to do is conjugate the French verb visiter.

Je vais visiter Paris.

I am going to visit Paris.

However, the idiom for visiting someone is slightly different.

In the next chapter you will learn how to say “to visit someone” in French!

To Visit Someone In French

If you want to say “to visit someone”, then you will use the following idiom:

  • rendre visite à [quelqu’un] = to visit [someone]

Je vais rendre visite à mes grands-parents.

I am going to visit my grand parents.

Il ne va pas rendre visite à sa sœur.

He is not going to visit his sister.

Laurent rend visite à Janine.

In both cases, you MUSN’T conjugate the verb visiter.

Also, if you want to say that someone is going to visit me/you/him/her/us/them, then you will use:

Je vais lui rendre visite.

I am going to visit her.

Vas-tu me rendre visite ?

Are you going to visit me?

Allez-vous leur rendre visite ?

Are you going to visit them?
